exercise seven:
The Hermit Crab
Hold a shell in the palm of your hand, and examine it. Notice
the small perfect spiral as it expands and widens. Look closely
at every detail. Feel the textures of the sea shell, and notice its
crevices, where it is most solid and most fragile. Observe the color
variations, and how they shift and change with the sun’s light.
Imagine the tiny creature that once inhabited it, that once called
this sea shell home. Imagine the hermit crab abandoning this shell
that was once his protection in favour of a better home, more
accommodating for his growing size.
What shelters have you abandoned? What do the sea shells you
carry look like? Imagine the shells that you have shed. The different
phases of life, the different types of armour.
