exercise one:
learning to be present
Place one hand over your heart and feel its steady pace in the now.
Breathe in. Then exhale. Now, try to place the other hand
over your heart in the past or in the future
Here’s the thing: When we are mindful, when we give our full, undivided attention
without judging we have space. Life is lived with eyes open, and we have control of our
minds. We can choose to live deliberately and in the PRESENT, which really is all there
is. Mindfulness meditation often conjures up images of Buddha on a mountain top, or a
super-limber yoga person chanting in the full lotus position.
The truth is, mindfulness practice can be done at any time, any place while doing most
anything. Meditation is about focusing the mind (for example on physical sensations
like the breath) or opening the mind (observing whatever it is that comes into our
awareness) without judging or clinging. Mindfulness meditation can be practiced while
sitting, standing, or through movement.
